The Lighthouse Special Education school is an exciting place to work!

The children that attend our school have complex learning challenges. The children learn both in self-contained classrooms and in mainstream classes.

Please note that all employees and volunteers will be required to have a Good Conduct check (Verklaring van Goed Gedrag) before commencing work at the Lighthouse.

Full-time Class Teacher

The Lighthouse Special Education school is currently seeking applicants for a full-time class teacher. The teacher would work across two self-contained classes with children with various special educational needs. The children range in age from 5 years to 12 years old.
The successful candidate will have experience of working with students with autism as well as language and developmental delays. He/she will also have experience of working with children with behavioural challenges.

Work hours: 8.00 – 16.30, Wednesdays from 8.00 – 14.00

Start date: 29 October 2018

End date: 19 July 2019, with the possibility of extension.

The job involves:

    • Preparing and delivering lessons to students, individually and in small groups.
    • Liaising with the mainstream class teacher before the work day for children in integration lessons
    • Supervising students at lunchtime and outside playtimes.
    • Giving feedback to the parents about students’ progress.
    • Managing students’ behaviour plans.
    • Working co-operatively with the teaching assistants assigned to the class.
    • Working alongside specialist therapists.
    • Attending meetings with parents and specialists about students’ progress.

All applicants must:

      • Have Dutch Qualified Teacher Status for primary schools (PO) and preferably for special primary schools (SBO)
      • Be fluent in English at native or near-native level.
      • Have knowledge and training in special education.
      • Have experience of working in a primary (5-12) special education classroom.
      • Have knowledge or experience of methods/programs used in special education, i.e. TEACCH, PECS, PRT, ABA, etc.
      • Demonstrate good interpersonal skills.
      • Have good ICT skills (Google, MSWord, iPad).
      • Be eligible to live and work in the EU.

Substitute Class Teacher

The Lighthouse Special Education school is currently seeking applicants for a substitute teacher to work on a flexible on-call basis for the school year 2018 – 2019. The cover teacher would work across two self-contained classes with children with various special educational needs. The children range in age from 5 years to 12 years old.
The successful candidate will have experience of working with students with autism as well as language and developmental delays. He/she will also have experience of working with children with behavioural challenges.

Work hours: as required on an on-call basis. There is also the possibility of 20 fixed days throughout the academic year 2018-2019 (days to be agreed)

Typical work day: is 8.00 – 16.30, Wednesdays from 8.00 – 14.00

The job involves:

      • Preparing and delivering lessons to students in the absence of the regular class teacher.
      • Liaising with the class teacher before the work day and giving feedback to the class teacher after the work day.
      • Supervising students at lunchtime and outside playtimes.
      • Managing students’ behaviour plans.
      • Working co-operatively with the teaching assistants assigned to the class.
      • Working alongside specialist therapists.

Part-time (specialist) Preschool Teaching Assistant

The Lighthouse Special Education school is currently seeking applicants for a part-time teaching assistant to work on a part-time basis for the school year 2018 – 2019 in the preschool Three Little Ships, to cover parental leave. The children are 3, 4 and 5 years old and some of them have special educational needs. The successful candidate will be able to deliver specialist interventions under the guidance of the Preschool Team Leader and the Learning Support Coordinator.

Work hours: Wednesdays from 8.00 – 14.00, starting 31 October 2018 (or earlier) and ending 17th July 2019

There is the possibility of additional hours, covering the sick leave of a colleague. These hours are open for discussion but are likely to include Fridays 8.00-16.00 and additional hours.

The job involves:

      • Assisting with the planning and delivery of learning activities
      • Establishing positive relationships with all the children, including those with special educational needs
      • Delivering 1:1 teaching sessions to children with special educational needs, including autism and speech and language delays.
      • Supervising children in the classroom and other learning areas
      • Promoting and safeguarding the welfare of the children
      • Evaluating the development and learning of children
      • Helping to set up and to maintain a safe learning environment

All applicants must:

      • Have qualifications in Early Childhood Care or Early Years Education (PM3 or qualified teacher status)
      • Have written evidence from the Dutch authorities that you may work professionally in Early Childhood settings (kinderopvang/peuterspeelzaal)
      • A valid work permit for The Netherlands
      • Have experience of working with young children
      • Having experience with children with special educational needs will be considered an advantage
      • Be a native or near-native English speaker
      • Have good interpersonal and organisational skills

Lunchtime Volunteer

The Lighthouse Special Education and Three Little Ships Pre-school is currently seeking volunteers to support our students during lunchtime. Volunteers work across two classes: one self-contained special educational class with students aged 5 years to 8 years and one preschool class with students aged 3 years to 5 years. It is helpful if volunteers can commit to at least one regular day per week on an ongoing basis.

Work hours: (Any combination of) Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday 11.50 – 13.10

The job involves:

      • Preparing for the students’ lunchtime, such as laying the table and helping with hand-washing.
      • Assisting students with eating their lunch.
      • Promoting positive behaviour at the table and in the classroom.
      • Clearing up after lunch.
      • Supervision of children outside at play.

      • Have experience of working with young children and with children with special educational needs.
      • Be a fluent communicator in English.
      • Have good interpersonal skills.
      • Have a flexible, professional approach.
